Closure of British pubs due to rising taxes and wages
Many beloved British pubs have closed due to harsh tax changes introduced by Rachel Reeves, as well as increasing wage costs. From April to June 2025, 219 pubs were reported closed, and from July to September, another 189. This is significantly more than the 163 closures between January and March. June proved particularly difficult, with 84 insolvencies occurring – the worst figure of the year.“Many small businesses are under pressure due to rising costs,” said an industry representative.Rising taxes and maintenance costs continue to negatively impact the hospitality industry in the UK, forcing many pubs to shut down permanently.British pubs, which are an important part of cultural and social life, are under threat due to financial difficulties. This situation raises concern not only among business owners but also among visitors who are losing access to their favorite establishments. Authorities need to find a balance between tax changes and supporting small businesses to preserve the pub tradition in the UK.
