Jockey Ray Dawson after Cocaine Disqualification Competes in St Leger.
Ray Dawson: From Struggles to Success in Horse Racing
According to The Sun: When Ray Dawson lost his driving rights due to a positive cocaine test in 2023, he realized it was time to change his life.
After a tough period that began with a crash in Newmarket in 2019 when he was intoxicated, a father of two seemed to finally be back on the right path.
PADawson worked hard both in and out of competitions, achieving a record of 64 wins in 2022. But on August 18, 2023, his life changed again when he participated in drunken driving, admitting to having taken 'eight or nine cocktails' of cocaine before five races in Bath.
Those facing similar struggles might break down, but the 32-year-old athlete sought help and began taking action for his recovery. Now he is preparing for the prestigious St Leger races in Doncaster, where he will compete as a 30-1 outsider, Rahiab.
“I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. It was a very scary time as everything started to fall apart around me”
Dawson stated that the events in Bath were particularly hard because he worked hard and achieved success. He believes that in 2023, he faced greater risks than he did in 2019, and he almost lost everything.
“I really had to think about my life. Do I want to keep falling, or do I want to work on getting back up?”
Now, returning to normal life, Dawson eagerly anticipates his performance at Town Moor.
“It’s fantastic to get a chance at St Leger. It’s a big opportunity for me, as everyone tries to achieve moments like this”
This year has been filled with emotional ups and downs. Dawson suffered a broken rib and left wrist from a fall in Nottingham in July, but later won the race for Lady of Spain at the Sandown competition.
“When I was lying in the hospital with my injuries, I didn’t think my victory would be in a class 3 race”
Now he plans to travel to Dubai at the end of October to reunite with Michael Costa.
“Roger has supported me a lot, especially when everything was going wrong”
Dawson emphasized that he hopes for a third victory in St Leger to repay his trainer for believing in his talent.
