Test for the Tastiest Burger in Britain: The Winner is Not McDonald's

According to The Sun: The Big Mac from McDonald's has become a global icon and is often considered the king of burgers.

This burger with double patties is so popular that there exists a special Big Mac Index used to compare living costs in different countries.

If you've decided to order a burger to go, the Big Mac is one of the most affordable options on the market.

But is it really worth its price, and does it truly taste the best?

Chains like Five Guys and Wendy's have received much praise for their quality offerings.

Lindsay Hope tried iconic burgers from various chains across the UK and found that McDonald's was not her top choice.

McDonald's Big Mac

  • Price: £5.09
  • Patty weight: 80 g
  • Calories: 580
Oliver Dixon

Despite its popularity, I had never tried a Big Mac before. The price of just over five pounds, which is only half more expensive than some competitors, looked attractive.

But the taste disappointed me. The patties each weighed only 40 g, so there was practically no meat. The sauce turned out to be decent, but overall the burger seemed dry and left me with a thirst for water.

However, it was neatly put together, and I liked the sesame seed bun.

GBK Smashed Classic 2 Patties

  • Price: £10.50
  • Patty weight: 110 g
  • Calories: 764
Oliver Dixon

The GBK burger came in a large luxurious package, but upon opening it, I realized it looked quite small.

This was disappointing since it was the most expensive burger in our testing.

GBK burgers consist of 100% British grass-fed beef, and the flavor of this meat was truly divine.

However, it lacked other ingredients. After eating it, I felt full, and upon learning it contains over 53 g of fat, I was shocked – nearly five times more than the Big Mac.

So, tasty beef, but not worth more than ten pounds.

Five Guys Classic Hamburger

  • Price: £9.35
  • Patty weight: 110 g
  • Calories: 840
Oliver Dixon

The Five Guys staff were the friendliest of all the restaurants I visited.

You can add as many toppings as you like, which is convenient for picky eaters.

The taste of the perfectly seasoned meat appealed to me, and the portion was adequate – 30 g more than at McDonald's.

Although the calories are off the charts, I liked it. The toasted sesame seed bun was among the best in our testing. The price is quite high, but I was full.

Wendy’s Double

  • Price: £6.99
  • Patty weight: 180 g
  • Calories: 888
Oliver Dixon

The Wendy's double burgers provide the largest portion of meat, weighing around 180 g.

They are filled with American cheese, fresh crunchy lettuce, tomato, pickles, Heinz ketchup, mayo, and onion – all in a toasted bun.

Eating it was a bit messy, but because it was overflowing.

The ordering process was simple, the restaurant was almost empty, so I didn’t wait long for my burger to be prepared.

This happened faster than at McDonald's, and the price was significantly more advantageous.

And while the price was £1.90 higher than the Big Mac, you got 100 g more meat, and the taste was on a completely different level. It easily became my favorite option.

Wimpy Cheeseburger

  • Price: £5.15
  • Patty weight: 80 g
  • Calories: 440
Oliver Dixon

I loved the nostalgic look of Wimpy.

The service here was friendly, and the restaurant looked exceptionally clean. I enjoyed my made-to-order burger.

The patty was meaty and well-seasoned, while the legendary special sauce was tasty, though it was overshadowed by the ketchup.

There was too much tomato sauce and shredded lettuce.

Eating it was quite messy. In terms of cost, it wasn't too advantageous – the price for an 80 g patty exceeded £5.

On the positive side, it's slightly healthier than other options, with lower calories and fat.

  • RATING: 2/5

TGI Fridays The Original

  • Price: £9.99
  • Patty weight: 140 g
  • Calories: 709
Oliver Dixon

For under ten pounds, the TGI burger also comes with fries, making it quite a good deal.

It included a second large piece of meat in two patties, along with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, and mayonnaise.

The meat was tasty and well-seasoned, and I liked the sesame seed bun.

The cheese in the burger was in a very good amount, and the mayonnaise was pleasant. The fries were salty, but not any less tasty because of that.

This is a nice offer if you're planning something special. It’s best to order in advance if you want pick-up, as I waited half an hour when I arrived.

  • RATING: 4/5

Burger King Whopper

  • Price: £6.39
  • Patty weight: 95 g
  • Calories: 595.3
Oliver Dixon

The Whopper burger from Burger King has a lighter, juicier texture, which enhances the flavor due to its grilling.

Slices of onion and tomato looked fresh, the lettuce was crunchy, and the toasted sesame seed bun was soft and had a darker glaze than the others.

Since the bread was toasted, it did not become entirely flavorful from the other ingredients.

You get a bit more meat for your money than at McDonald's, but you also pay more – £1.30 extra, which can significantly affect those who frequently visit these establishments.

Moreover, it is significantly more caloric than the Big Mac – 29.8 g of fat versus 11 g.

Overall, the burger turned out a bit dry. I would have liked more sauce.
