Glenfiddich 12-Year-Old Single Malt Scotch

  • Price: £42.50 for 70Cl (40% ABV)
David McHugh / Brighton Pictures

Glenfiddich whisky is a classic, with a soft taste of oak and sherry that lingers on the palate.

The price of £42.50 per bottle makes it almost twice as expensive as all the tested supermarket brands, although it was previously sold at Tesco for £30.

  • Taste: 9/10
  • Value: 5/10
  • Overall: 14/20

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

  • Price: £23 for 70Cl (40% ABV)
David McHugh / Brighton Pictures

Sainsbury's Highland whisky offers a warm, smoky flavor.

It is very similar to Glenfiddich but less refined, with a more pronounced alcoholic taste.

At just £23 per bottle, this budget version is a decent alternative to the original at almost half the price.

  • Taste: 6/10
  • Value: 8/10
  • Overall: 14/20

Aldi Glen Marnoch Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

  • Price: £18.49 for 70Cl (40% ABV)
David McHugh / Brighton Pictures

For less than £20, and previously sold for under £15 at Aldi - this is genuinely a budget option.

Unfortunately, its taste may come across as budget.

The aroma is very harsh, with the first impression being rough and oily, although there is an aftertaste of peat and smoke.

  • Taste: 3/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Overall: 10/20

Lidl Ben Bracken Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

  • Price: £18.49 for 70Cl (40% ABV)
David McHugh / Brighton Pictures

Lidl's budget whisky has a strong alcoholic taste that irritates the throat.

However, it leaves a pleasant aftertaste of dark chocolate and cherry and is even smoother than the Aldi version.

At a quite reasonable price of £18.49, this option may actually be a decent choice.

  • Taste: 4/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Overall: 11/20

WINNER – Waitrose No.1 8-Year-Old Blended Scotch

  • Price: £23.50 for 70Cl (40% ABV)

This was the only whisky we tried in the blended category, and it turned out to be one of the best.

It has a smooth, rich peaty flavor, with notes of tobacco and molasses.

This taste will certainly appeal to peat whisky lovers, as the aroma is very intense - testers unanimously noted the high quality of the product.

The price of £23.50 per bottle makes it the most expensive among supermarket brands, but it is £19 cheaper than Glenfiddich, and our testers acknowledged that it does not lag behind in quality.

  • Taste: 8/10
  • Value: 7/10
  • Overall: 15/20
As a result of the testing, it became clear that even in the budget segment of supermarket whiskies, you can find decent options that can compete with well-known brands. Waitrose No.1 became the undeniable winner, offering a good price-to-quality ratio and vibrant flavor notes, making it worth trying for those who care about their wallet but don't want to sacrifice drink quality.
