Roy Jones Jr. wins Olympic gold 37 years later: the scandal story in Seoul.
According to The Sun: ROY JONES PRAYED AND CRIED AS HE RECEIVED THE OLYMPIC GOLD THAT WAS TAKEN FROM HIM 37 YEARS AGO.
The American boxer became a finalist at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, where he broke the nose of British boxer Richie Woodhall in the semifinals without losing a single round.
In the final, he faced South Korean boxer Park Si-Hun, who was given certain advantages.
Jones, 56, confidently dominated the ring, even delivering a standing knockdown to his opponent.
However, in one of the saddest moments in Olympic history, the judges declared Park the winner by a score of 3-2.
After the announcement, Park apologized to Jones, and when the Italian referee raised his hand, he whispered:
“I can't believe they did this to you.”
After nearly 40 years, an emotional meeting between Jones and Park took place in a gym. Jones wrote:
“In 1988, my gold medal was stolen in the biggest controversy in boxing history. Thanks to God, a few years ago, the man who won that medal came from South Korea to my home to return it to me, believing that it rightfully belongs to me.”
Park's son acted as a translator when he told Jones:
“My father says he has been waiting for this for 36 years.”
Park continued:
“I held the gold for a long time, but I wanted to return it to you because it belongs to you.”
Jones, covering his eyes with his hand, couldn't hold back his tears.
Park also added:
“I have something for you. This is the gold medal from the 1988 Olympic Games.”
Jones, looking at the medal, exclaimed:
“Wow. This is just incredible.”
Only three of the five judges who favored Park were suspended for six months, two of them received lifetime bans. An IOC investigation in 1997 established that these judges received expensive lunches and gifts from the Olympic Games organizers.

Although the facts of corruption in the case of stripping Jones of his gold medal could not be proven, his career, where he became one of the most successful professionals, is even more impressive. He won championship titles in various weight categories, ranging from middle to heavyweight. Meanwhile, Park, although not to blame in this situation, experienced negative emotions and eventually left the sport to become a physical education teacher.
