Return of the legendary track to Formula 1

According to The Sun: The head of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, confirmed that one of the iconic circuits is ready to return to the racing calendar nearly a decade after the last race.

For many fans of Formula 1, the absence of the German Grand Prix has been a bitter loss, as the country has gifted the world with outstanding drivers like Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel.

Germany lost the right to host Formula 1 races in 2019 when the national constructor Mercedes celebrated its 125th anniversary in motorsport.

In the context of growing interest in Formula 1, several countries and tracks are competing for the right to enter the racing calendar, including Portugal and Turkey.

Prospects for a return

Meanwhile, fans of classic tracks can be pleased with positive news: Hockenheim is interested in returning to the Formula 1 calendar.

Domenicali stated in an interview with Autosport:

“We have signed important contracts with many promoters. Long-term agreements allow us to distribute investments. We have a lot of requests. In 2026, Zandvoort will host its last Grand Prix, so we are discussing new additions, including event rotation. But there will not be many: one or two - no more. Barcelona is also interested in another open spot. There is Portugal, Turkey, and recently Hockenheim - which now has new owners - has also shown interest.

It is important to note that Hockenheim was removed from the Formula 1 calendar due to financial difficulties in 2019, and the race was won by Max Verstappen after Lewis Hamilton's crash.

New investors, including the Emodrom group, which acquired a controlling stake in the track last August, are supporting the track.

Funding for new facilities is critical for Hockenheim's return to Formula 1. However, Domenicali emphasized that the race also requires government support.

He added:

“It’s very difficult. Virtually 90% of promoters receive financial support from their governments or related organizations. Without this support, it’s hard.”

Hockenheim Director Jorn Teske also expressed optimism about the possible return.

He noted:

“We at Hockenheimring are very interested in F1, and we are pleased that there is mutual interest. We are definitely planning to hold direct negotiations soon.”

Formula 1 will introduce new Spanish circuits in Madrid and street races in Thailand in 2025. The next race will take place on September 21 in Azerbaijan.

The revival of the German Grand Prix in Formula 1 would be an important event for motorsport fans, especially considering the long and successful history of the country in this sport. Additionally, new investments and support from the state could help confirm Hockenheim's return to a professional motorsports level.
