Two clothing stores are closing in Scarborough: what is known about the reasons

According to The Sun: Street fashion favorite Bonmarche, which has over 200 stores, will permanently close its branch in Scarborough on September 14. Disappointed locals are expressing their doubts about the closure on social media.

One of them said: 'Very sad.'
And another added: 'Oh no... this is bad.'

The store is currently having a big sale where shoppers can find great deals until it closes. Unfortunately, Bonmarche is not the only fashion retailer shutting its doors in the town.

New Look is also planning to close its branch on September 5 and has no intention of opening another store in Scarborough. A spokesperson for New Look expressed gratitude to its colleagues and the local community for their support over the years, urging customers to continue shopping at the online store newlook.com.

A Bonmarche representative noted that the closure of the Scarborough branch is related to the shutdown of the Brunswick center. However, they are actively looking for a new location in the local area to continue serving their customers.

The closures of Bonmarche and New Look raise serious concerns among locals about the town center potentially becoming a 'ghost town.' The Brunswick center is set to close its doors to the public on September 17, 2025, as part of the city's redevelopment plans.

Despite these closures, some retail landlords have moved into Scarborough, providing hope that the redevelopment will attract more visitors and bring long-term benefits to the community.

With rising maintenance costs, many retailers are facing challenges. New Look and Bonmarche are just two of the many stores that have had to close branches due to increasing costs and a declining footfall.

On a positive note, Aldi plans to open even more supermarkets, announcing plans to launch 11 new stores in 2025.
