Legendary London club Corsica Studios will close in 2026.
Closure of the Iconic Club in London
According to The Sun: The renowned nightclub in London has announced its closing date, marking a new blow to the capital's nightlife scene. The venue confirmed it will cease operations in 2026 after 25 years of existence.
Google mapsThe Corsica Studios club, located under the railway bridge at Elephant & Castle station, will close in March 2026. The official statement reads:
“Nothing lasts forever. Corsica Studios - in the form we know it - will close its doors at the end of March 2026.”
The venue will hold a series of farewell events from December 31, 2025, to its last working day on March 29, 2026. The club, with a capacity of 500, opened in 2002 and quickly became popular due to its simple aesthetic and support for London's underground scene.
Reasons for Closure
The reason for the closure is plans for a £1.5 billion reconstruction initiated by the Southwark council and developers Get Living. A new residential complex is being built here, on the site of the former Elephant & Castle shopping center, with some apartments located just meters away from the club's smoking area.
Owner Adrian Jones assured that the club was “not evicted by developers or the council.” He emphasized that the premises will be soundproofed thanks to the developers and will be refurbished as a cultural and creative center in 2027. The statement noted:
“We believe we have now achieved the best outcome for the space. It will be a refurbished, soundproofed venue with long-term leasing and a set of legal measures to protect the establishment from potential noise complaints from neighbors.”
Uncertainty and Changes in the Nightlife Scene
It remains unknown whether Corsica Studios will return in the form it is known. Jones noted that managing a beloved club has negatively impacted his mental health, stating:
“With all good will, I have been doing this for 24 years in Elephant, and before that - in North London, which is constantly being rebuilt, and this is not conducive to mental health.”
Despite this, music and nightlife will return to this area in some form. A representative of Elephant noted:
“Corsica Studios has played a unique and valued role in London's cultural life, and we are committed to ensuring its continued existence.”
Currently, the fate of the nightclub and the final decision of the owner remain unknown. This occurs against the backdrop of the closure of another legendary London bar. G-A-Y Bar on Old Compton Street is ceasing operations after over 40 years in existence. Jeremy Joseph, the owner of the Heaven club, has had to choose between the two establishments due to rental difficulties.
The Impact of the Pandemic on the Nightlife Scene
Since 2013, the UK has lost half of its nightlife venues, according to data from analytical companies CGA for NIQ and AlixPartners. The Covid-19 pandemic, along with the cost-of-living crisis, has had catastrophic consequences for the nightlife scene. High energy costs have severely impacted businesses, while soaring inflation has led people to spend less on partying. According to the Night Industry Association (NTIA), there has been a 32.7 percent decline in activity since 2020.
