The Disappearance of Turkey Twizzlers

According to The Sun: The Turkey Twizzlers snack has quietly vanished from store shelves, two decades after chef Jamie Oliver launched a campaign that led to their ban in school cafeterias.

This controversial product disappeared without an official announcement from the manufacturer Bernard Matthews Foods.

The History of the Snack

Turkey Twizzlers hit the market in 1997 but disappeared in 2005 due to Jamie Oliver's campaign 'Feed Me Better' aimed at improving school nutrition.

Oliver pointed out that the product contained only 34% meat and many other additives.

In 2018, a petition for their return was launched, gathering 28,000 signatures. And in 2020, a new version was introduced that already contained 63% turkey.

The return of the snack was celebrated with the erection of a Turkey Twizzler statue outside Bernard Matthews Foods' headquarters in Norfolk.

Fan Critiques

A fan, 31-year-old teacher and snack lover Mehmet Salih Sulejman from Crystal Palace, South London, noted that the Turkey Twizzlers have been gone from sale longer than usual.

He wrote to Bernard Matthews Foods:

"Honestly, I believe they have become part of my DNA by now. I grew up eating them during lunchtime in primary school. These delicious spirals of joy were the highlight of my week. Imagine my heart when I started looking for them in every supermarket, only to find empty shelves or the sign 'not available' mocking me. Had I known they would disappear again, I would have stocked my freezer as if it were an apocalypse."

Official Statement from the Manufacturer

A representative from Bernard Matthews stated:

"Unfortunately, the Turkey Twizzler product line has been discontinued and we have no plans to bring it back. The production site was closed in March 2024, so the product unfortunately had to be removed from the range."

Turkey Twizzlers, once the beloved treats of many, were long under the spotlight due to Jamie Oliver's campaign. And while their fate looks sadly bleak, the activity of the fans shows that memories of these flavors are still alive. With the closure of the production site, the manufacturer leaves behind not just a product but also an important part of culinary history.

These events highlight how changes in the food industry can shape consumer preferences and influence the lifespan of products. The recent attempts to bring back Turkey Twizzlers show that consumers are always ready to support what evokes nostalgia and pleasant memories.
