India Mandates Refineries to Report Weekly on Russian Oil Purchases.
According to ТСН: Oil refineries in India are required to provide weekly data on purchases of Russian and American oil for the office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Reuters reports this, citing five industry and government sources.
"We want timely and accurate data on oil imports from Russia and the US, so when the US asks for information, we can provide verified figures instead of relying on secondary sources," explained an unnamed official about the Indian government's requirement.
New Guidelines for Refineries
The origin of the oil purchased by Indian refineries is usually noted in monthly customs reports and data from analytical companies. This is the first instance where the government requires such information weekly.
Sources emphasized that the refineries have not received clear directives to reduce the purchase of Russian oil. However, according to their estimates, imports of Russian crude oil may drop to less than 1 million barrels per day as India plans to enter into a trade agreement with the US.
Increase in American Oil Purchases
India aims to boost imports of American crude oil after refineries have already increased purchases of American gas. According to Kpler, in 2025 India imported 6.6% of crude oil from the US, while Russia accounted for 35%.
Previously, US President Donald Trump stated that India would abandon imports of Russian oil.
It is worth noting that the supply of Russian oil to India may decrease to a minimum for the first time in three years. This may indicate a shift in energy balances and expectations of partnership agreements between India and the US, which will impact international oil markets.
