Iran Shoots Down US Spy Plane: Washington Weighs Ground Invasion.
Escalating Tensions Between Iran and the United States
According to UATV: In a significant escalation, Iran destroyed an American reconnaissance aircraft by launching a missile strike on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. This incident has reignited debates over the possibility of a US military campaign inside Iran. US officials are now evaluating plans for a ground operation, with potential targets including raids along Iran's coastal areas.
US Military Buildup in the Middle East
As part of preparations for possible military action, Washington is discussing the deployment of up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East. Several thousand US Marines aboard the USS Tripoli have already arrived in the region. However, according to expert Vyacheslav Likhachev, even a force of one to three thousand Marines may be insufficient to secure control over Iran's coastline along the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Iran has reduced its missile stockpile from 5,000 to just 1,000 units, which may indicate a decline in Tehran's military capabilities. To counter threats from Iran, the US is launching one or two Patriot missiles for each incoming threat. In response to the escalating conflict, Washington has also sent Tehran a 15-point peace plan.
These developments come amid changes to the recruitment age for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has been lowered to 12 years. Such moves suggest Iran is preparing to adjust its military strategies in the face of heightened conflict. The US President stated that
“we have completed the vast majority of our military objectives”, reflecting confidence in US military capabilities. However, Likhachev emphasized that
“this is not about a large-scale operation”, indicating a cautious approach by Washington to further escalation in the region.
This situation underscores the growing friction between Iran and the US, which could have serious implications for regional security. On one hand, Iran is demonstrating a willingness to defend its interests by reducing its missile reserves and adapting its military strategy; on the other, the US continues to bolster its military presence in the Middle East while trying to avoid an open conflict. All of this may signal preparations for a new phase in relations between the two countries, with potential consequences for global stability.
