According to The Sun: Ireland's racing community is in mourning after the sudden death of one of the most successful jockeys in the point-to-point discipline. Mikey O'Connor died on Thursday at his stables at the age of just 44.
Throughout his career, he achieved 429 victories in this discipline. He suddenly fell and, unfortunately, could not survive.
Famous point-to-point jockey Mikey O'Connor tragically passed awayO'Connor achieved great success not only in point-to-point but also won 90 races under rules. His biggest victory came in a Listed race in 2009 under trainer Mick Winters.
O'Connor played a crucial role in the development of the legendary Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Denman, aiding in his preparation and jumping training before being sold for racing under Paul Nicholls.
A father of three, O'Connor also successfully worked as a National Hunt trainer, securing 27 victories in point-to-point and 21 rule wins in Ireland.
According to the Irish Field, the cause of his death was suspected to be a heart attack at the stables in County Cork.
Horse Racing Ireland stated: “We are deeply saddened to learn of Mikey O'Connor's passing. We extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in the racing world.'
“Mikey was one of the leading jockeys in Ireland, winning over 400 races and securing three southern titles. May he rest in peace.”
O'Connor suffered several serious injuries throughout his professional career and had to be urgently hospitalized after a fall at Boulta in 2014.
He is survived by his wife Megan, daughters Sophie and Rachel, son Dylan, as well as mother Norine and twin sister Elaine.
The tragedy of Mikey O'Connor's death is a major blow to Irish racing. His substantial contributions to the field and numerous victories will forever remain in the memories of colleagues and fans.
