Spain Invests €1.36 Billion in 30 High-Speed Trains: Key Details.
Spain Moves Forward with High-Speed Train Acquisition
According to Novyny.live: Spanish rail operator Renfe has announced plans to purchase 30 high-speed trains for a total of €1.36 billion. The company also holds an option to acquire an additional 40 trains, valued at nearly €1.8 billion. Combined, these tenders are estimated at €4.14 billion. This investment underscores Spain’s commitment to modernizing its rail network, already one of the most advanced in Europe.
Delivery of the first five trains is expected within 40 months of signing the contract. Under the agreement, the remaining units will be delivered over 78 months, with one train arriving every six months. The new high-speed trains in Spain will operate at around 300 km/h. To reach speeds of 350 km/h, infrastructure upgrades will be necessary.
Upgrading Railway Infrastructure
The Madrid–Barcelona corridor is the first route slated for potential modernization. If upgrades proceed, travel time between these two cities could drop to under two hours. Each new high-speed train must have at least 450 seats, divided between two classes.
Procuring these new trains marks a significant step in upgrading Spain’s rail infrastructure, promising to enhance both speed and passenger comfort. Shorter travel times between major hubs like Madrid and Barcelona could boost domestic tourism and business activity. Adopting new technologies will also help rail transport stay competitive as air travel continues to grow in popularity.
