Spain Introduces New Flight Tax: How Much More Passengers Will Pay.
Spain's New Aviation Levy
According to Novyny.live: Starting in April 2023, Spain will implement a fresh aviation surcharge of €36 (roughly 1,800 Ukrainian hryvnias) for flights to popular European holiday destinations. This policy will drive up ticket prices, affecting travelers booking trips to Spain, France, Portugal, and Greece.
Specifically, from April, economy-class passengers on domestic routes will see fees rise from €16 to €18 (around 800–900 hryvnias). For business-class travelers, charges will jump from £84 to £142 (between 5,000 and 8,200 hryvnias). These adjustments are part of a broader tax strategy aimed at generating extra revenue for the state.
Impact on Travelers
The Air Passenger Duty (APD) was first introduced in 1994 and has undergone several revisions since. With the updated rates, travelers will now pay more for air travel, potentially reducing the appeal of trips to these nations. Consequently, vacations to Spain, France, Portugal, and Greece will become more expensive, possibly altering the plans of many tourists.
The introduction of Spain's new aviation fee reflects a wider European trend of increasing tax income from the tourism sector.
This shift could change traveler behavior, prompting some to seek alternative destinations or modes of transport to cut costs. Amid growing competition in the tourism market, such changes may also impact the economies of countries that rely heavily on travel and tourism.
