Streamlining Procedures at Rome’s Airports

According to Novyny.live: To avoid major disruptions during the peak summer travel season, Rome’s airports are considering temporarily halting border inspections as part of a new EU entry-exit system. Since April 10, 2023, the EES framework has been operational, introducing stricter controls such as fingerprinting and photography. However, with passenger numbers surging, Fiumicino and Ciampino airports may need to ease these procedures to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

This process is simply incompatible with the peak volumes we are expecting. The only viable solution is to relax the restrictions. There is no way we can achieve 100 percent registration.

Marco Troncone, CEO of Aeroporti di Roma

Rome’s airports have rated their alert level at 'eight or nine' on a scale of one to ten, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Challenges Facing European Airports

With passenger traffic on the rise, allowing travelers to bypass biometric checks may become a necessary step to ensure smooth airport operations this summer.

This scenario underscores the difficulties European airports are grappling with as they balance growing passenger volumes and the rollout of new control technologies. The need for fast and efficient screening is becoming critical, especially during peak travel periods when delays can cause major headaches for passengers. Decisions to relax certain rules could prove essential in improving the travel experience and maintaining the stability of air travel across Europe.
