ISW debunks the myth of China's 'peacekeeping' role in Russia's war against Ukraine.
China supports Russia's efforts in Ukraine
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has identified a troubling trend in the relations between China and Russia during the war in Ukraine.
According to the report, China, which presents itself as a peacekeeper, is indeed actively supporting Russian military efforts.
According to The Times, Western officials have uncovered evidence that a Chinese company supplied military drones to Russia. These drones are reportedly intended for 'testing' by Russian forces to assess their effectiveness on the Ukrainian front. Furthermore, sources confirm the existence of a secret Russian program in China to develop long-range strike drones specifically designed for use in Ukraine.
China's support for Russia's military machine is not limited to drones. According to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, nearly 70% of the machinery and 90% of the microelectronics used by Russia to produce weapons come from China and Hong Kong. These components are critically important for the manufacturing of missiles, armored vehicles, and ammunition that Russia is actively using against Ukraine.
ISW experts emphasize that this behavior contradicts China's statements about its commitment to peace in Ukraine. By supporting Russian aggression, Beijing undermines its own rhetoric of neutrality and desire to be a mediator in the conflict.
China's continued support of Russia's military efforts can impact the course of the conflict. Even a small number of strikes on military targets deep within Russia can significantly weaken its ability to continue the war.
