Jockey Jim Crowley was hospitalized after a horrific accident at the races in York.
Injuries of riders at the York races
According to The Sun: Jockey Jim Crowley is currently on the operating table, and Trevor Whelan suffered a broken leg in three places and is also waiting for surgery after horrific accidents at the races in York.
Both riders fell during the main race of the day on the northern track.
Crowley was in the famous blue and white colors among the group on Almarek when he fell, hitting Whelan on Tiger BayCrowley, who was riding the favorite Almarek, apparently snagged a hoof.
This caused a chain reaction, resulting in Whelan falling from Tiger Bay in a six-furlong race.
Racing was halted as both riders first received help on the track and were then rushed to hospital in Leeds.
Luckily, both horses remained fine, although spectators described the events as 'absolutely horrific.'
“Thank you all for the well wishes for a speedy recovery, I really appreciate it. I have a broken leg in three places and also need to be operated on,” Whelan confirmed on X.
The stewards plan to conduct an investigation into Callum Rodriguez’s actions after the race.
He finished second on Christof Distinction, but the stewards want to establish whether his actions were the cause of the fall.
Rodriguez also hit another horse, Prince of India, on the nose with his whip – but this was deemed accidental.
The BHA stewards' report stated: “The stewards want to investigate the incident two furlongs before the finish involving CHRISTOF DISTINCTION, who finished second, ridden by Callum Rodriguez; ALMAREK, who fell, ridden by Jim Crowley; and TIGER BAY, who was knocked down, ridden by Trevor Whelan, but were unable to do so as the riders were receiving medical assistance. The investigation will be postponed to a date to be confirmed.”
These incidents occurred against the backdrop of competitions that raise serious questions about track safety. Rider falls always lead to intensified discussions about safety measures, so this inquiry may become an important step in improving racing conditions in the future. Stewards and event organizers will have to carefully consider all circumstances to prevent similar situations in the future.
