Hellyer is instantly thrown from the saddle
He appeared to be completely unconscious even before hitting the ground – he was fortunate to avoid more serious injury
Michael had just jumped onto the horse when it threw its head up and struck the juggler in the face.
Hellyer didn’t have time to react, and his head snapped back.
It seems he immediately lost consciousness and couldn’t catch the moment to avoid falling.
Fortunately, he escaped serious injuries considering the force with which he landed.
Clearly detailing the injuries he sustained from the incident before the races in Toowoomba, Australia, Hellyer said: “Thank you to everyone who supported me. I was very lucky to only have a busted lip and a concussion. I look forward to getting back in the saddle in a few weeks.”
Sky Sports Racing presenter Tim Carroll was among those who were shocked by the incident.
He posted on X: “Anyone who has ever taken a hit like that will tell you it hurts. There’s half a chance that this blow to the head was enough to knock Michael out even before he hit the ground. Good to hear he’s okay.”
The incident served as a stark reminder of the risks that jugglers and jockeys face when working with horses. While Michael sustained injuries, his quick recovery brings optimism. We hope he returns to his beloved sport soon and that this incident serves as a lesson for safety in competitions.
