The UK government plans to raise the tax on horse racing bets: the industry warns of thousands of lost jobs.
The danger to horse racing from new tax proposals
According to The Sun: After entering the House of Commons, representatives of the horse racing industry issued a clear warning: if the government implements the proposed increase in the tax rate on horse betting, thousands of jobs could be lost, and the sport itself could be on the brink of collapse.

At the conclusion of the rally, which saw many industry professionals participating, it was announced that the issue would be discussed in Parliament. As a result, four races at Carlisle, Lingfield, Kempton, and Uttoxeter had to be canceled. Organizing the event was difficult due to a strike by London workers.
Later, ten jockeys dressed in white with the words ‘Abolish the horse betting tax’ raised a banner in Parliament Square.
‘When I first started in Newmarket in the mid-1970s, we were in a terrible state. If the government implements these proposals, I fear they will take the sport back to those dark times.’
‘It is important for the government to realize that Turf Racing and horse breeding in this country are the best in the world. I don’t think they understand that.’
Protests against tax changes
Speaking publicly for the first time as chairman of the BHA, Lord Charles Allen emphasized the importance of unity in horse racing. He urged industry representatives to engage actively with MPs, as horse racing plays an essential role in society.
The Treasury issued a statement denying rumors about a tax increase, emphasizing that there are currently no plans to raise the tax on horse betting.
The chances for the industry to learn about the tax proposals will become apparent in November when Rachel Reeves presents her autumn budget. Sports leaders continue to work to highlight the importance of maintaining support for horse racing.
The situation in the industry is truly concerning. Many hope that decision-makers will recognize the importance of supporting horse racing and its impact on the economy and culture of the country.
