Jose Mourinho leaves Fenerbahce

According to The Sun: Jose Mourinho has ended his collaboration with the Turkish club Fenerbahce. The 62-year-old Portuguese departed Istanbul two days after the team was eliminated from the Champions League by Benfica.

The former coach of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham took charge of Fenerbahce in the summer of 2024, six months after being dismissed from Roma. Under his management, the team finished second last season.

However, Mourinho failed to win any trophies with Fenerbahce: the team was knocked out of the Turkish Cup in the quarter-finals and lost to Rangers in the Round of 16 of the Europa League.

Fenerbahce lost to Benfica 1-0 in the deciding Champions League playoff match, following a goalless draw in Istanbul.

Former Galatasaray player Kerem Aktürkoğlu's first-half goal caused Fenerbahce to play in the Europa League next season.

Before the match, Fenerbahce's vice president Hamdi Akin expressed confidence that their team would 'easily' defeat Benfica.

“Believe it or not, but I don’t know who he is,” said Mourinho, commenting on Akin’s statement. “I do not know this person, his influence, or even his importance in the club's structure. No one introduced him to me.”

In October of last year, commenting on his possible next steps, Mourinho said: “The best thing I can do - when I leave Fenerbahce - is to move to a club that does not play in European cups.”

“So, if any club in England, even from the bottom of the table, needs a coach within the next two years - I am ready to go.”

When his words were discussed again earlier this week, some Manchester United fans joked about Mourinho’s possible return as a replacement for Ruben Amorim, who is under pressure.

One fan wrote: “So Mourinho is coming back to Man United, right?”

And another added: “None of them can handle the pressure and winning culture. We just need Jose Mourinho.”

SunSport reported last week that Mourinho is being considered as a candidate to replace Nuno Espírito Santo at Nottingham Forest.

Nuno, 51, is currently under pressure after a clash with the club's football department head, Edu.

This week, Mourinho became the second former Manchester United manager to lose his job at the Turkish club.

The situation with Mourinho highlights the instability in coaching positions in the football arena, where even star specialists can find themselves at risk of dismissal. At the same time, interest in Mourinho’s services indicates that his experience is still valued at a high level, and we may soon see him in a new club once again striving for success on the international stage.
