Ukraine to Launch Major Road Overhauls After War Ends: Key Details Revealed.
Major Road Reconstruction in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine will not begin large-scale road reconstruction until the war concludes. For now, only routine maintenance is underway, including on the Kyiv-Odesa highway and the bypass around Korostyshiv. This year, additional spot repairs are planned using grant funding, notably on the Zhytomyr bypass, where work had been halted for 5–6 years due to legal disputes.
Repair operations on the Kyiv-Kharkiv route have already started in the Kharkiv region. It is crucial to note that all national roads must be completed by June 1. Restoring roads of international and national importance will require approximately 12–14 billion hryvnias. However, according to Serhiy Sukhomlyn, underfunding in the road sector exceeds 90%.
Sukhomlyn stated that 'after the war,' funding should return to the road fund, as 'other priorities' currently take precedence.
He also acknowledged that 'yes, we had contractors from a country that is helping the Russian Federation.' However, he assured that 'within a week or two, the main problematic sections will be fixed.'
Funding and Recovery Challenges
The issue of financing and restoring Ukraine's roads remains pressing. Sukhomlyn emphasized the need to secure adequate resources for the major repair work scheduled to begin once hostilities end.
Rebuilding Ukraine's road infrastructure is critical for ensuring mobility and driving economic growth after the war. Given severe underfunding and competing budget priorities, the government faces significant hurdles in allocating sufficient resources to the road sector. The next steps in major road repairs could have a substantial impact on economic recovery and the quality of life for citizens.
