Drone Strikes on Refineries Trigger Fuel Crisis in Russia: One in Five Trucks Now Idle.
Fuel Crisis Hits Russia
According to UATV: Russia is facing a severe fuel crisis that has left up to 20% of its freight trucks idle and driven up transportation costs. Drivers endure hours-long queues at gas stations, while the agricultural sector suffers from delivery delays. A key factor worsening the situation is the series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries.
Currently, one out of every five trucks in Russia is sitting idle, severely disrupting logistics. As a result, the average cost of freight transport has jumped by 30%, with some routes seeing increases of up to 150%. These price hikes are already affecting various industries, especially agriculture, where supply delays are threatening crop yields.
Impact on Agriculture
Data shows that as of June 1, 2023, the area planted with spring crops was 11.3% smaller than the previous year, while winter crop planting dropped by 7.4%. This highlights the serious challenges farmers face amid the instability caused by the fuel crisis.
In a broader global context, India increased its imports of Russian crude oil to over 2.5 million barrels per day in June 2026. Russian oil now accounts for more than 50% of India's total imports, underscoring the country's continued reliance on Russian energy resources.
One driver commented on the situation: 'We can't take it anymore. I don't understand — Russians.'
The fuel crisis in Russia continues to worsen, impacting key areas of the economy, particularly logistics and agriculture. These challenges are expected to have long-lasting consequences for the country.
This crisis highlights the fragility of Russia's economy, especially amid ongoing military conflict and international sanctions. Rising transport costs and agricultural delays could further reduce food production, exacerbating social issues. The situation in the oil market and its ripple effects on countries like India also reflect the complex geopolitical dynamics in which Russia is striving to maintain its foothold in the energy sector.
