Fuel Crisis in Russia Exposed by Intelligence: Gasoline Prices Surge by a Third.
Russia's Fuel Situation
According to UATV: Despite Kremlin assurances to the contrary, Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service has revealed a severe fuel crisis unfolding across Russia. The situation is particularly dire in several regions, where fuel prices have skyrocketed. Between July 1 and July 10, 2023, the average price of AI-92 gasoline at Russian filling stations hit 64.5 rubles per liter. AI-95 gasoline climbed to 77.5 rubles—a 24% increase—while AI-98 soared to 119.5 rubles, marking a 32% jump.
In July 2023, Russia's daily gasoline production dropped to 71,500 tons, far below the average summer demand of roughly 110,000 tons per day. Domestic output now covers only about 65% of consumer needs, highlighting a deeply troubled fuel market. This context is crucial for understanding the broader economic pressures facing the country.
Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service notes that 'Russia is once again trying to convince its own population that the fuel crisis is receding.'
This points to Kremlin efforts to mask serious problems in the fuel sector. Experts warn that 'these are signs of a market that is collapsing,' confirming troubling economic trends.
Regions Hit Hardest
The areas facing the most acute difficulties include:
- Tambov
- Astrakhan
- Kirov
- Penza
- Voronezh
- Rostov
- Volgograd
- Orenburg
- Yaroslavl
- Perm Krai
- Chuvash Republic
- Republics of Mordovia and Udmurtia
- Crimea
All of this suggests that 'everything points to the Kremlin preparing not for overcoming the crisis, but for its long-term existence.'
The fuel situation in Russia could have far-reaching consequences for the country's economy. Rising fuel prices may trigger inflationary pressures, reduce consumer purchasing power, and worsen social issues. Moreover, instability in the fuel market threatens Russia's energy security and its ability to meet domestic demand—a concern not only for Russia but also for its neighbors and international partners.
