Indoor Plants Can Cool Rooms by Two Degrees, Study Finds.
How Houseplants Improve Air Quality
According to TSN.ua: Research from the University of Surrey indicates that indoor plants can significantly enhance air quality and comfort within buildings. They are particularly effective at reducing the perceived heat and increasing humidity levels. This is a crucial finding for environments where people spend roughly 90% of their time, highlighting the functional role of plants beyond mere decoration.
Key Findings of the Research
A team of 35 experts from the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia, India, and Brazil compared 26 different greening systems. Their results demonstrated that large plants can lower indoor temperatures by approximately two degrees, a significant factor for creating a comfortable climate. Furthermore, specially designed systems can reduce concentrations of fine particles and volatile organic compounds, which are known to negatively impact human health.
Prasant Kumar, one of the study's participants, emphasized that 'plants should be viewed not as decoration, but as part of a building's environmental infrastructure.'
This study was part of the GREENIN Micro Network Plus project, operating under the Global Centre for Clean Air Research. The findings could inform future initiatives to improve ecological conditions in urban indoor spaces and promote greening as an effective tool for ensuring a healthy environment.
The results underscore the importance of ecological research and its direct impact on daily life. Given rapid urban development and increasing air pollution, integrating plants into urban infrastructure represents a vital step toward improving quality of life. The study may also encourage architects and urban planners to incorporate natural elements into new building designs, which would positively influence the ecological situation in cities.
