How Indoor Plants Improve Air Quality

According to TSN.ua: Research from the University of Surrey, conducted as part of the GREENIN Micro Network Plus project, demonstrates that houseplants can significantly enhance indoor air quality and comfort. They achieve this by lowering temperatures, increasing humidity, and reducing pollution levels, establishing them as a crucial component of interior landscaping.

Involving 35 experts from countries including the UK, Europe, the USA, Australia, India, and Brazil, the study was overseen by the Global Centre for Clean Air Research. The team compared 26 different types of greenery systems and discovered that larger plants can reduce a room's temperature by approximately two degrees. This finding underscores the vital role plants play in creating a comfortable indoor climate.

The Critical Role of Plants in Enclosed Spaces

The researchers also noted that plants boost air humidity, which is particularly beneficial during winter or in air-conditioned environments. As one expert emphasized,

“people spend around 90% of their time indoors, yet the impact of greenery on the indoor environment remains insufficiently studied”
— Prashant Kumar. This highlights the urgent need for more research into how houseplants affect our quality of life in enclosed spaces.

Consequently, the study confirms that indoor plants are not merely decorative; they perform essential functions that directly improve human health and comfort. This is especially relevant as modern, sealed buildings can often trap pollutants and create dry, stale air.

The conclusions of this research could significantly influence future architecture and interior design by stressing the importance of integrating plants into living and working areas. In an era of global warming and growing concerns over air quality, strategically using houseplants offers a smart, natural solution for enhancing public health and fostering more comfortable environments. Further studies are poised to expand our understanding of plants' role in our interiors and their profound impact on our well-being.
