Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced that he is raising tariffs on imports from the US by 25% in response to new sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump.

'I have been informed that you are imposing a 50% tariff on products of our labor for import to the US, and I am doing the same,' Petro wrote in a message to Trump.

The sanctions against Colombia were announced after the country blocked the landing of American military deportation flights. The Colombian president claims that the flights were approved but canceled when the planes were already in the air.

In his address, Petro expressed disagreement over the use of military aircraft for deportation and the attitude of the US towards Colombian migrants.

Accordingly, Trump announced sanctions, including 'an extraordinary 25% tariff' on all imports from Colombia, which will later increase to 50% after a week. A 'travel ban' was also announced for Colombian citizens and visa cancellations for Colombian officials in the US.

'Trump, I really don't like going to the US, it's a bit boring,' Petro remarked in response to Trump's announcement.

He also continued to criticize Trump's policies and character, emphasizing that he does not consider himself 'an inferior race,' as he believes the US president suggests.

Petro calls for Colombia to be open to the whole world and to spread freedom, life, and humanism.
