Bloomberg analyst Mark Champion noted that after a week of military actions in the Kursk region, during which the Armed Forces of Ukraine took control of a thousand square kilometers of territory, the goals of this operation remain a mystery, even for Russian officials. He believes that Ukraine may have many motives, but the success of the operation will depend on the development of events.

"It may take several weeks or months before we know whether it was a successful but risky maneuver that changed the course of the war... or whether it is a disaster that pulled thousands of experienced Ukrainian soldiers from tense defensive lines only to spend them on a vanity project," he writes.

The analyst thinks that such an operation should have taken place within the framework of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Its surprise is only that it happened so late - two and a half years after the start of the invasion. According to him, the reason for this was the restriction that the West imposed on the Ukrainian army, forbidding it to use the weapons of its partners outside the internationally recognized borders of Russia. However, after the invasion of Russian troops, these restrictions disappeared.

"Russia does not feel guilty using Iranian and North Korean missiles and shells, as well as its own, in Ukraine from Russian territory. And there is no reason why it should be protected from retaliatory strikes," the author emphasizes. - "It was Putin's choice, not Zelensky's or NATO's, to turn Russian territory into a warzone".

The US still prohibits the Armed Forces of Ukraine from using their long-range missiles to strike Russia. However, Champion believes that it is Time to make the appropriate decision, as Ukraine is already attacking Russian targets on their own territory using drones without it. This issue becomes particularly important in the context of potential peace talks.

"It is impossible to seriously claim that Ukraine intends to capture and annex any part of Russia. Therefore, holding the recently gained strip of border territory until possible peace talks would be a very difficult task," he notes. - "However, the quickest way to force Putin to come to the negotiating table to conclude a peace deal is to demonstrate that Russia will not be reliably protected as long as it continues its aggression".
