Pop star Taylor Swift expressed her support for Kamala Harris in the US presidential election after the debates with Donald Trump that took place Tuesday evening.

"I will cast my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election," Swift wrote in a post on her Instagram account. "I consider her a balanced, gifted leader, and I believe we can achieve much more in this country if we are led by calm rather than chaos."

The singer accompanied her post with an image of her holding her cat Benjamin Button, and captioned it "Childless Cat Lover." This is a clear nod to the disparaging comments made by the Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance about the country being run by "a bunch of childless cat lovers." (Swift has three cats, all named after movie or TV characters: Benjamin Button, Olivia Benson, and Meredith Grey).

Swift, possibly the most famous celebrity on the planet, stated that it is "much easier to vote early," and that she will share information on how to register and vote early on her accounts. She has an impressive social media reach: she has 283 million followers on Instagram, and her post received over 2.4 million likes in the first 30 minutes after publication.

This is not the first Time Swift has intervened in electoral politics. She supported President Joe Biden's campaign in 2020 and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the successful Senate race against Marsha Blackburn (Republican from Tennessee) in 2018.

Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz welcomed the support in an interview with MSNBC after the debates.

"I am grateful to Taylor Swift, and I say this as a cat owner," said the governor of Minnesota. "This will be an opportunity for Swifties. Come and help us, and let's get started."

Taylor Swift - a phenomenon of modern pop culture

Taylor Swift, born in 1989, started her music career as a country singer in her teenage years. Her debut album "Taylor Swift" was released in 2006 when she was just 16 years old. Since then, she has released 10 studio albums, each of which has had enormous commercial success.

Swift is known for her songwriting talent. Her lyrics are often autobiographical and touch on themes of love, breakups, and personal growth. This has allowed her to establish a strong emotional connection with her fans, known as "Swifties."

Throughout her career, Swift has received numerous awards, including 12 Grammy Awards. She has also set several Guinness World Records related to album sales and popularity on streaming services.

In 2023, Time magazine named Taylor Swift "Person of the Year." Her concert tour "The Eras Tour" became the first in history to gross over $1 billion in net profit. Economists note the significant impact of Swift's tours on the local economy in the cities where she performs.

Apart from her music career, Swift is known for her charitable activities and active civic position. She has repeatedly spoken out on political issues, notably supporting Democratic Party candidates in elections.

Her decision to publicly endorse Kamala Harris in the upcoming election is a continuation of her civic activism and could have a significant impact on young voters, given the singer's enormous fan base.
