Zelenskyy on Lukashenko: Once Certain of Russian Victory, Now Fleeing the War.
Alexander Lukashenko’s Shifting Stance on the Ukraine War
According to UATV: In an interview with the Financial Times, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed how Alexander Lukashenko’s position on the conflict in Ukraine has evolved. According to Zelenskyy, the Belarusian leader—who initially allowed his country’s territory to be used as a launchpad for the invasion of Ukraine—is now trying to distance himself from direct involvement in the war. Zelenskyy noted that Lukashenko had been confident in a swift Kremlin victory, but that confidence has since faded.
Belarus Seeks to Avoid Escalation
On July 6, 2023, Lukashenko announced that Belarus would not send its troops into Ukraine. This statement appears to reflect a desire to prevent further escalation and safeguard national security. Commenting on the situation, Zelenskyy remarked:
“He walked into the casino on the wrong day. He was sure he’d hit the jackpot. But he didn’t win anything.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy
These developments highlight the intricate geopolitical dynamics in the region and the shifting approaches to the war, which could influence the future actions of those involved. Once viewing himself as a key ally of the Kremlin, Lukashenko now appears to be seeking ways to keep Belarus out of active combat. Such a change in stance may signal growing concern over the war’s consequences for Belarus and a push to maintain internal stability amid international uncertainty.
