Nine EU Nations Urge Immediate Approval for US Missile Purchases to Arm Ukraine.
Securing American Missiles for Ukraine
According to UATV: The defense ministers of nine European Union countries have formally requested that the European Commission urgently authorize the procurement of American-made missiles for Ukraine. This funding would come from the EU’s support program for 2026–2027, which totals €90 billion. The move directly addresses Ukraine’s pressing need to strengthen its air defense capabilities amid ongoing hostilities.
Signatories to the appeal include the defense chiefs of the Netherlands, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Denmark, and Poland. Within the framework of this €90 billion initiative, Ukraine requires specific missile types, including:
- PAC-3 interceptors for Patriot systems
- AIM-120 air-to-air missiles
- ATACMS long-range tactical missiles
- ADM-160 MALD decoy systems
- AGM-88 HARM anti-radiation missiles
This request highlights the critical role European allies play in shoring up Ukraine’s defenses as the security situation deteriorates. It also underscores the urgency of ensuring Kyiv has access to advanced weaponry to counter aerial threats.
An Urgent Plea to the International Community
Separately, Ukraine has appealed to nearly 40 partner nations for the immediate transfer of Patriot system missiles. In their statement, the signatories stressed:
“Swift approval of delivery schedules is essential, including through the pragmatic use of exceptions for purchasing from third countries.”
This language underscores the critical time sensitivity and the need for rapid international action. Overall, the joint call from the nine EU member states signals growing solidarity and a firm commitment to supporting Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This initiative sends a powerful message that European nations are prepared to take concrete steps to back Ukraine in the face of intensified aggression. Acquiring advanced missile systems would significantly boost Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, especially in air defense—a domain that has become a top priority. Such efforts also reflect a strengthening of European unity on security and defense matters, which could shape future EU policy toward Ukraine and the broader region.
