The Kremlin's Search for a Successor to Kadyrov Signals a Shift in Chechnya's Power.
Health Crisis and Accident Prompt Kremlin to Seek New Chechen Leadership
According to UATV: The Kremlin has initiated a search for a potential successor to Ramzan Kadyrov, indicating a significant shift in Chechnya's political landscape. This move is driven by the declining influence of the Kadyrov clan, stemming from Ramzan Kadyrov's severe health issues and a serious accident involving his son, Adam. Kadyrov suffers from kidney failure and was diagnosed with pancreatic necrosis in January 2019.
On January 16, 2023, Adam Kadyrov was hospitalized following a traffic accident caused by speeding, in which the driver of the other vehicle died. Despite his youth, Adam had already received at least 26 medals and awards by the age of 18, highlighting his prominent public role.
Political Repercussions and Potential Candidates
In light of these events, the Kremlin is considering appointing a new head for the Chechen Republic. The stability of this region is crucial for Moscow's control over the North Caucasus. Among the potential candidates named for the position are:
- Apti Alaudinov
- Magomed Daudov
“Ramzan Kadyrov is not long for this world,” notes Renat Davletgildeev, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Thus, amid Kadyrov's worsening health and the incident with his son, the political climate in Chechnya is growing increasingly tense. This is forcing the Kremlin to actively seek a successor to ensure continued control over the region. The loss of the Kadyrov clan's influence could lead to instability and heightened competition among local elites, a scenario the Kremlin is keen to avoid through this strategic leadership transition.
