Declining Russian Military Offensive Power

According to Novyny.live: U.S. Vice President JD Vance has assessed that Russia's ability to conduct offensive operations is sharply declining, attributing Ukraine's advantage to its effective defensive strategy. He emphasized that Russian forces can no longer achieve significant battlefield gains, and their offensive potential is 'approaching zero.' This assessment highlights a major shift in the dynamics of the conflict that took shape during the summer of 2023. The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has seen dramatic reversals in momentum.

Ukraine’s Counteroffensive and New Realities

Ukraine’s counteroffensive, launched in the summer, has stripped Russia of its battlefield edge. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in mid-June 2026 that while Russia had previously been attacking along 12 axes, it now holds an advantage on only two or three. These developments demonstrate that Ukrainian forces have been able to effectively counter the Russian advance.

Kostiantynivka remains a key target for Russian operations in Donetsk, but even at this strategic location, Russia faces severe difficulties. Vance also noted that

'every square kilometer of captured territory costs Russia an enormous price.'
This underscores the heavy economic toll the Kremlin is enduring as the war drags on.

The shifting battlefield conditions and the erosion of Russian offensive strength indicate that the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, with Ukrainian forces capable of defending their land. Ukraine’s robust defensive strategy, combined with Russia’s mounting costs, may signal potential changes in the conflict that could reshape the course of fighting and international support for Ukraine.
