From April 1, the cost of the annual BBC license increased by £5 — from £169.90 to £174.50.
Every household that watches or records TV content on any channel or service, as well as uses BBC iPlayer, must have a license. This applies to watching, recording, and downloading TV content on any device.
Conditions for a refund
You can apply for a refund if you no longer need the license:
- Moving to an address with an existing license - If you're moving to a residence that already has a license, yours may not be needed.
- Free license for individuals over 75 - If you are 75 or older and receive Pension Credit, you are entitled to a free license.
- Living in a care home - Residents of such institutions may also be eligible for a refund.
- No live TV viewing - If you do not watch TV or BBC iPlayer, you can cancel the license.
How to apply for a refund
The amount of the refund depends on the remaining time on your license. Refunds are usually calculated based on full months, and you must have at least one month of license validity.
Applications can be submitted 14 days before the date your license expires. Refunds are processed within 21 days and can be paid by check or transferred to a bank account.
If you watch TV without a license, you could face a fine of up to £1,000, or up to £2,000 in Guernsey, plus possible legal costs.
The increase in TV license fees in the UK has sparked discussion among the public, as free coverage options for the license can significantly ease the financial burden on older demographics. Moving to a new address or changing viewing habits may prompt refund applications, so it is important to be aware of your rights and options in this situation.Read also
