Lithuania to Build 23 New Defense Installations Along Borders by 2030.
Lithuania Establishes a New Defense Zone
According to UATV: By 2030, Lithuania plans to set up a fresh defensive zone along its borders with Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad region, adding 23 new facilities. These installations will be positioned on national roads and bridge approaches, featuring structures designed to hold explosives. The total cost of the project is estimated at €50 million, with funding sourced from the State Defense Fund. This initiative is part of Lithuania’s broader strategy to bolster its military readiness amid rising regional tensions.
Military Insights and Project Aims
According to military representative Tomas Godliauskas,
“through detailed planning and alignment of this defense concept with NATO plans, the military has identified the need for additional measures.”He stressed the importance of expanding security efforts, noting that
“the network of engineering parks must be increased to 50, with corresponding funding allocated and plans made for their acquisition and installation over time.”
Godliauskas further explained that the goal is to create a “first-line zone extending several hundred meters deep.” These steps are part of Lithuania’s ongoing efforts to enhance its defense capabilities in response to growing regional threats.
The planned creation of this new defense zone highlights Lithuania’s intensified military measures in light of threats from neighboring countries. As tensions escalate—particularly due to Russia’s aggressive policies—such initiatives are crucial for strengthening Lithuania’s defensive power and its ability to cooperate with NATO. This also reflects a broader trend among Baltic nations to ramp up security and defense investments in the face of modern challenges.
