Lithuania Slashes Train Ticket Prices by 50%: Who Qualifies and When the Discount Runs.
Lithuania’s Railway Fare Reduction
According to Novyny.live: From April 1 through May 31, Lithuania is cutting train ticket prices by half on all domestic routes in response to rising fuel costs. The initiative aims to ease the financial strain on residents who rely on rail travel amid climbing energy prices.
The 50% fare reduction applies from April 1 to May 31 and can be combined with other discounts. The program will cost Lithuania’s state budget approximately €1.5 million. Kristina Meidė, CEO of LTG Link, said extra carriages will be added on popular routes to accommodate increased demand.
'This measure is part of the government’s broader response to rising fuel prices.' – Inga Ruginienė
Meidė also warned that 'on popular routes, especially weekends and holidays, tickets may sell out quickly.' The fare cut is designed not only to support passengers but also to ensure comfortable travel conditions during peak demand periods.
Impact on Citizens and Passenger Traffic
This Lithuanian government measure addresses escalating energy costs and aims to support citizens under financial pressure. By introducing rail ticket discounts, the policy is expected to boost passenger numbers and make domestic travel more affordable. The addition of extra carriages on high-demand routes also signals the railway operator’s readiness to adapt to shifting demand, which could improve overall passenger satisfaction.
