The Restoration of the Famous Swimming Stadium in Morecambe

According to The Sun: In Morecambe, plans are underway to excavate the forgotten swimming stadium after a lengthy break of more than five years.

This sea lido, known as the 'Super Swimming Stadium of Morecambe', first opened its doors on July 27, 1936. The opening ceremony was conducted by the Governor of the Bank of England, Sir Josiah Stamp.

The project aims to transform this area into a new major attraction.

History of the Stadium

The stadium, which cost around £185,000 to build (equivalent to over £13 million today), was created on the site of the shipyard TW Ward Ltd. Upon opening, it became the largest outdoor pool in Europe, accommodating approximately 27,000 swimmers over two days.

This impressive facility measuring 396 feet by 110 feet included areas for water polo, diving, three levels of approach, a sun terrace, and a café.

Even after World War II, the stadium continued to host national and international sporting events, including the Miss Great Britain and Miss World competitions.

However, in 1975, due to its neglected state, the stadium was closed and subsequently demolished.

A New Life for Old Architecture

Currently, an ambitious excavation project is planned at the stadium site, being implemented by Eden Project Morecambe in collaboration with Lancaster University, Lancaster City Council, and Lancashire County Council.

Olly Marshall from the architectural charity Twentieth Century Society noted that the stadium was 'almost in a different league compared to other remaining lido remnants - in terms of scale and ambition'. As quoted by the BBC, he added that the lost lido was 'more of a stadium than an open swimming pool, accommodating around 1200 swimmers and 3000 spectators.'

The Eden Project stated: 'Over the years, Morecambe has been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK, attracting visitors drawn by its stunning natural landscape. Eden Project Morecambe, a new major attraction, transforms Morecambe into a resort for the 21st century, inspired by nature and education, ecology, and community.'

This transformative project costing £100 million will be inspired by 'natural geometries, beauty, and efficiency of shells'.

According to statements from the Eden Project, the plan includes creating 'more pregnant natural landscapes and engaging worlds where visitors can enjoy world-class art, performances, storytelling, interactive installations, and games.'

Similar Eden projects have been implemented in Dundee, Scotland, as well as in Australia, China, Dubai, and Costa Rica. This new project in Morecambe is a significant step toward restoring the tourist appeal of the region, which could contribute to economic development and growing interest in local architecture and nature.
