A Lost Mayan City Found in Mexico: It Withstood the Spaniards for Centuries.
According to The Sun: Scientists have discovered the lost city of Sak Balam, where Mayan rebels held out against Spanish conquerors for over 300 years. The Lacandon Ch'ol retreated into the jungle, after which the city was conquered in 1695. Currently, archaeological excavations are taking place at the site, which aim to shed light on the history of this tribe and its struggles.
Researchers used an innovative predictive model to locate the city of Sak Balam in the wilderness. Their research is supported by the Discovery Channel and has already yielded results - archaeologists found foundations, remnants of walls, and various artifacts. We hope that this work will help to better understand the history of the Lacandon Ch'ol and their struggle against the Spaniards.
