After the final, a fight broke out on the field between players from both teams. Suarez, who is now 38 years old, may face lasting consequences, as his six-match ban will be in effect for the next season when the 2026 tournament starts.

If Inter Miami does not reach the semifinals, Suarez's punishment could extend until 2027, as there will be a maximum of six games in the tournament, and teams will play three matches in the group stage before the playoffs.

For Suarez to have the opportunity to play next year, Inter Miami needs to reach the final or play for third place. If the team does not advance from the group, he will only be able to return to the field in this tournament in 2028.

The ban does not apply to MLS matches, but it is reported that he could also be punished separately in this tournament.

“The things that happened after the match should not have occurred, but this does not justify my reaction. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.”

In addition to Suarez, other players have also been banned for their actions during the fight: former Barcelona player Sergio Busquets for two matches, Tomas Aviles for three matches, and Seattle Sounders coach Stephen Lenhart for five matches.

All four have also received fines.

Suarez is known for his aggressive behavior on the field—his career has had many controversial moments. He received a 10-match ban in 2013 for biting Branislav Ivanovic, and his bite on Giorgio Chiellini resulted in a four-month suspension.

Suarez played for Liverpool from 2011 to 2014, and later won numerous titles in La Liga with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. In 2024, he joined Inter Miami, where he reunited with Lionel Messi and Busquets.

AP:Associated Press PA The situation surrounding Luis Suarez underscores worrying trends in sports, where aggression on the field can lead to serious consequences for players. Exclusions like this raise concerns among fans and experts, as sports should serve as an example of respect and fair play. Suarez is not new to controversies, and the question of whether he can change remains open.
