Co-Op has introduced a new way of shopping. Now shoppers can join the membership program just by scanning labels in the store.

As part of the 'Easy to Join' promotion, shoppers can be added to the chain's program by simply scanning labels. Using near-field technology, the labels direct users to a webpage with the membership program each time they scan a label.

This step is part of the chain's strategy to reduce the number of paper price tags in its 2600 stores. Currently, ESLs are used in 700 stores, but Co-Op hopes to roll them out in more than 1600 branches by the end of the year.

David Tayas, Head of Innovation at Co-Op, stated that the update will improve 'transparency' and reduce unnecessary 'waste'.

Additionally, the stores will sell everyday necessities such as toothpaste and shampoo. Open from 7 am to 7 pm, some stores will also function as home delivery points, allowing you to receive parcels in-store.

The head of the branded supermarket chain, Mark Hood, confirmed that the stores will operate differently than a regular Co-Op branch.

He said: 'This is not a very small version of Co-Op, it differs greatly in composition and how we serve the customer.'

The applicant stated that they hope this move will allow the company to expand its 15 percent market share in grocery sales in the UK, as competitive brands such as Pret a Manger and Greggs are increasing their market presence.

The popular convenience store chain Co-Op is introducing innovations that will allow shoppers to save money and gain more options while shopping. In particular, the membership program, changes to branch formats, and expansion of product ranges will become available to customers. Such steps are aimed at improving convenience and service quality, as well as increasing the company's competitiveness in the UK food market.
