Free Electricity for Thousands of Households

According to The Sun: This weekend, thousands of consumers of the largest energy supplier in the UK will take advantage of the opportunity to use electricity for free due to storm Emi.

Households that have chosen the Agile tariff from Octopus Energy may receive free electricity today, October 4, and there is a possibility that they will even receive payment for the electricity used.

Additionally, Octopus provides free electricity to all its customers for three hours this weekend as part of the Savings Sessions initiative.

How the Storm Affects Prices

Wholesale electricity prices are expected to remain below zero all day on Saturday for the first time since 2023 due to strong winds from storm Emi.

The storm may contribute to an increase in renewable energy supply, boosting generation from wind farms and reducing reliance on gas, which in turn lowers wholesale energy prices.

The price of the Agile tariff from Octopus Energy changes every half hour, as it is linked to wholesale electricity prices. Thus, households using this tariff may pay nothing or even receive payment for their energy today.

Octopus Energy informed The Sun that it has already observed five hours of negative prices today, with expectations that prices may drop below zero again later today.

Free Electricity for All Customers

Prices will drop below zero on Saturday at 12:30 PM, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM, and again late in the evening at 9:30 PM and 10:30 PM, according to the energy company's report. Overall, households on the Agile tariff can expect nine hours of negative prices today.

Even if you are not on the Agile tariff, you can still get free electricity this weekend, as Octopus is offering three hours of free electricity to all its customers.

Savings Sessions will take place from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 4, and from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Sunday, October 5. During these hours, the electricity you typically consume will cost the same, and any additional energy you use will be free.

How the Savings Sessions Program Works

This program allows customers to earn rewards for reducing electricity consumption during designated hours when the national grid is under strain. To participate in the program, you need to be a member of Octoplus — a free rewards program for customers with smart meters.

Households will receive notifications a day before the Savings Sessions begin to prepare.

Octopus reported that customers on the Agile tariff saved an average of £268 over the past 12 months on electricity bills compared to those on a standard variable tariff.

While you can save on green tariffs, prices can spike sharply during peak hours, so it’s important to be flexible in electricity usage to achieve the best value.

These tariffs are typically recommended for households that can use most of their electricity outside of peak load hours, or for those who have electric vehicles or electric heaters.

You also need to have a smart meter to take advantage of these tariffs.

Increase in Utility Rates

Thousands of households will face rising electricity bills this week following the introduction of a new price cap by Ofgem on Tuesday.

The average annual bill for those on a standard variable tariff paying by direct debit has risen by 2%, which is an additional £35.14, now reaching £1,755 up from the July cap of £1,720.

This situation emphasizes the importance of price dynamics in the energy market and the emergence of opportunities for consumers. Storm Emi, although bringing unfavorable conditions, has acted as a catalyst for changing energy tariffs and providing free electricity. Such initiatives can help households save, but they also require some flexibility in energy consumption.
