Tesco Mobile cancels cheap tariffs: millions of customers face price hikes.
Changes to Tesco Mobile tariffs
According to The Sun: The well-known mobile operator with 5 million subscribers has announced the cancellation of low tariffs, which will lead to price increases for many users.
Tesco Mobile is making significant changes for its more than 1 million subscribers who are on pay-as-you-go (PAYG) tariffs.
AlamyThe operator plans to cancel the Lite, Rocket, and Triple Credit tariffs, moving all subscribers to the standard Essentials tariff.
These new changes may incur financial costs for some users, as the call and SMS charges on the Essentials tariff are higher than those on the Lite tariff. However, the Rocket and Triple Credit tariffs will remain similar to the new tariff.
Essentials tariff plan
Here are the charges for the Essentials plan from Tesco:
- Calls to standard UK numbers – 25p per minute
- SMS to standard UK numbers – 10p per message
- Data – 10p per MB
- Voicemail – 15p per minute
- Photo sharing – 55p per message
While the old Lite tariff charged 8p per minute for calls and 4p for SMS, the new tariff will demand more than 200% more from users.
These changes are occurring against the backdrop of a planned 3G shutdown at the end of the year.
Our new Pay as you go Essentials tariff offers everything you need in a simple 30-day package of data, minutes, and SMS, said a Tesco Mobile representative.
Packages start at £5, with unlimited calls and SMS in every package from £10 and above. We are always ready to help, so if you have questions, visit your nearest Tesco Mobile store to talk to our friendly staff.
What to do if you are on one of the canceled tariffs?
The changes started at the end of September, but subscribers will be gradually transitioned to the new plan over the next few weeks and months.
If you are moved to the standard plan, Tesco Mobile will inform you 30 days prior to the transition.
You will initially receive a free 30-day package of calls, SMS, and data based on your average usage over the past three months.
At the end of the 30 days, you will start automatically paying the standard Essentials tariff rates.
Otherwise, you can switch to one of Tesco's packages. For example, the cheapest Essentials package costing £5 includes 500 MB of data, 500 minutes, and 500 SMS.
The £10 package includes 10 GB of data and unlimited SMS and minutes, while the most expensive package at £30 provides 100 GB and unlimited SMS and minutes.
According to MoneySavingExpert.com, it's advisable to stay on standard PAYG rates if you use your phone infrequently or only for emergencies.
The site notes that Tesco is the cheapest provider using the O2 network, but if you are willing to switch networks, you can find better deals.
For example, Talk Home, which uses the EE network, offers tariffs starting at 1p per MB, 1p per call, and 1p per SMS.
Experts also recommend looking for better options if you frequently purchase packages, as providers like Lebara and Sky Mobile offer cheaper SIM cards with one-month contracts.

These changes in Tesco Mobile tariffs could significantly impact subscribers' financial situations, so it is important to carefully review the new terms. The operator hopes the new Essentials tariff will suit most customers, but subscribers should consider alternatives to avoid overpaying for services.
