Co-op closes 35 stores in Britain: why the chain is reducing its network.
Closure of Co-op store
According to The Sun: The well-known supermarket chain Co-op plans to close one of its stores, with another 34 potentially disappearing soon.
A press release from the company stated that the decision to close the store was a "difficult" one, and their supermarket will shut its doors next month.
GoogleCo-op confirmed the closing date of its store in LeicestershireThe Co-op store on Derby Road in Ashby-de-la-Zouch will permanently close its doors on Saturday, November 22.
A statement from a Co-op representative said:
"Our store in Ashby-de-la-Zouch will close next month. Our priority is to fully support our colleagues who have already been informed. We would like to thank the community for their support of this store."
The company faced criticism for having two of its stores in close proximity in the center of Ashby.
This move came after Central Co-op relocated from the upper part of Market Street closer to the already existing store.
The representative also added:
"We are reviewing our existing stores, and sometimes, after careful consideration, we are forced to make tough decisions about closures."
Central Co-op will continue to operate, with the nearest store located about three miles away in Moira, Swadlincote, Derbyshire.
This happened amid the potential closure of another 34 stores due to financial difficulties.
The Sun previously reported that stores in Braintree, Chelmsford, Basildon, Thurrock, and Southend are at risk of closure.
Chelmsford Star Co-op reported that it is "financially struggling" and needs to merge with the larger Central Co-op.
The company's issues, as noted, have been exacerbated by rising national insurance contributions and increasing living costs.
At the end of last year, Co-op announced plans to "reformat its portfolio", including relocating stores.
The cooperative has over 7,000 registered branches owned by 17 million members and is estimated to contribute about £35 billion annually to the UK economy.
Co-op is affected by rising living costs, like many other companies.
In December last year, it was announced that 19 Co-op stores would close across the UK due to "financial viability issues". Among them are stores in Leicestershire, York, Norfolk, and the West Midlands.
B&M acquired three of the 19 stores, while retailer Samy Ltd bought 16.
Other Co-op news
Meanwhile, Co-op is implementing significant changes in its network across the country.
The supermarket is transitioning to electronic price tags, replacing paper ones, in the coming months.
The retailer has already implemented these changes in 340 stores but plans to expand their rollout.
The chain stated that by the end of the year, 1,500 stores will be equipped with electronic labels, and by the end of 2026, all 2,400 stores.
Electronic labels are developed by VusionGroup, which also collaborates with Asda.
Steven Log, head of operations at Co-op, noted:
"Convenience in everything we do, Co-op strives to continuously seek innovative technologies that can enhance our operations."
Co-op reported that the new electronic labels would provide information about allergens and nutritional value, as well as the country of origin of products and promotions.
These changes in the Co-op supermarket chain reflect an active search for solutions to adapt to new economic conditions, particularly due to financial difficulties faced by some branches. At the same time, by transitioning to electronic labels, the company aims to optimize its business processes and make shopping for customers more convenient.
