Major supermarket to give 28,000 workers new pay rise in DAYS as it takes on Lidl.
Pay Rise at Aldi
According to The Sun: Major supermarket chain Aldi has announced a pay increase for 28,000 employees to improve its market position and compete with Lidl.
Aldi noted that its hourly-paid workers are expecting a higher wage than anticipated.
GettyLast month, Aldi announced a pay raise for warehouse workers from £12.75 to £13 starting September 1. This amount will now increase to £13.02 per hour, and for more experienced workers, to £13.95.
In London, new rates rise from £14.05 to £14.35, and for long-serving workers, to £14.66 per hour.
“Our employees are the heart of our success, and we are committed to fully rewarding them for their outstanding work.” - Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland
Aldi is already the highest-paying supermarket in the UK. Previously, they raised the minimum hourly wage to £12.75 nationwide and to £14.05 in London.
Aldi is also the only retailer that provides all employees with paid breaks, which is estimated at around £1,425 per year for each store employee.
This pay rise was announced just a few days after Lidl announced an increase from £12.75 to £13.00 nationally.
“We will continue to ensure that we remain leaders in the market for pay.” - Stephanie Rogers, HR Director of Lidl GB
Both retailers exceed the level of the real living wage, which stands at £12.60, and the national living wage of £12.21.
