The court verdict and the circumstances of the incident

Akins, who is celebrating his 36th birthday this year, began a 14-month prison sentence in April after pleading guilty to the death of a cyclist due to careless driving.

The tragedy occurred in March 2022 when he hit 33-year-old Adrian Daniel while driving his Mercedes G350 near Huddersfield.

According to BBC reports, Akins may be released after serving half of his sentence, allowing him to leave prison and spend the rest of his time under supervision.

Thus, his possible release presents a chance to return to the field for the 'Stags' before Christmas.

State of affairs at the club

The 'Mansfield' club confirmed in May that they 'continue to consider their position' regarding Akins in the player roster.

The player's contract is considered valid until the end of the 2024/25 season.

But for now, he remains on the team's roster on the official club website and also features on the English Football League website.

“The club will review Lucas's position when he is released from custody, and will not comment on this matter at this time.”

The 'Stags' team started the campaign in League One with three wins in the first seven matches, placing them 11th in the table, just three points off the playoffs.

Akins's career

Akins joined 'Mansfield' in 2022 from 'Burton Albion' and has made 154 league appearances for the club, scoring 28 goals.

At the international level, he has represented the Grenada national team, playing seven matches and scoring two goals: one of them was scored in a match against Saint Martin, and the other during a match with the Saint Lucia team.

Thus, the situation with Lucas Akins requires attention as his return to the field may affect the team's performance in League One. Despite legal challenges, he remains an important player for the club, and his potential release could be a significant event for the fans of 'Mansfield Town.'
