Quick and Easy Marinated Mackerel in Just 12 Hours

According to Novyny.live: Marinated mackerel is a delicious and straightforward homemade appetizer. With just a few basic ingredients, you can prepare this dish without spending much time. The following recipe yields perfectly marinated mackerel in only 12 hours. This method of preserving fish is a popular technique in many European cuisines.

Ingredients

  • Two fresh-frozen mackerel, approximately 1300 g total
  • One to two onions
  • 800 ml water
  • Three tablespoons salt
  • Two tablespoons sugar
  • Seven to ten black peppercorns
  • Four to six allspice berries
  • One teaspoon coriander seeds
  • Three to four bay leaves
  • Two to three cloves
  • One tablespoon vegetable oil
  • One tablespoon 9% vinegar

Begin by preparing the marinade. Combine the water, salt, sugar, black peppercorns, allspice, coriander, bay leaves, and cloves in a saucepan. Bring this mixture to a boil, then allow it to cool completely to room temperature.

While the marinade cools, clean the mackerel by gutting and washing them, then cut them into serving pieces. Place the fish pieces in a container, layering them with sliced onion. Pour the cooled marinade over the fish, then add the oil and vinegar. Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 12 hours at approximately 4 °C.

After marinating, the mackerel will be ready to serve. This simple recipe produces a flavorful and aromatic appetizer perfect for any meal. It's a common feature on Ukrainian tables, especially during holidays and picnics, prized for its ease of preparation and practical, extended shelf life.
