Vondrousova Withdraws from US Open Due to Injury: What Happened to Wimbledon Champion

According to The Sun: Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova cried as she withdrew from the US Open due to an unexpected injury during practice.

Just two hours before her match at Arthur Ashe Stadium in front of 24,000 spectators, the Czech tennis player announced she would not take the court for her quarterfinal match against Aryna Sabalenka.

Sabalenka, who was defending her title, learned about this from a representative in the hall and immediately received an automatic pass to the semifinals, where she will meet American Jessica Pegula.

This incident was a huge disappointment for Vondrousova, as she missed last year's tournament due to injury.

During practice on Tuesday, ESPN filmed as she executed a routine forehand but suddenly cried out in pain. Feeling sharp discomfort, the athlete could not continue the session.

The 26-year-old tennis player sat on a chair, looking upset, hiding her face in a towel while her team tried to calm her down.

Leaving the practice area with a bag on her shoulder, Vondrousova was spotted texting on her mobile phone.

In her statement, Vondrousova noted:

“I am sorry to report that I have to withdraw from the quarterfinal match this evening due to a knee injury. I tried to do everything possible to get on the court today, but during warm-up I felt my knee again and after consulting with the tournament doctor decided not to risk worsening the injury. I am grateful for all the support at this tournament and apologize to the fans who were waiting for the match. I had great experiences in New York and cannot wait to return next year.”

The sudden loss of Vondrousova forced US Open organizers to urgently change the schedule, as the match between Sabalenka and Vondrousova was set for 7:00 PM before Novak Djokovic's match against Taylor Fritz in the men's quarterfinals.

A representative of USTA commented:

“Marketa Vondrousova has withdrawn from the US Open in women's singles due to injury. Aryna Sabalenka advances to the women's singles semifinals by virtue of a free pass.”

A year ago, before Vondrousova became a champion on grass, she underwent two surgeries on her left wrist – the cast was removed just before the wedding, and there were concerns that she would not be able to continue competing at a high level.

During her long break from the WTA Tour, her contract with sponsor Nike was not renewed.

Vondrousova, one of many successful Czech left-handed champions, loves her tattoos and proudly displays them during matches.

Sabalenka, 27, wrote on Instagram:

“I’m so sorry for Marketa after everything she’s been through. She played amazing tennis, and I know how much it hurts her. Take care, hope you recover quickly. Love, Aryna.”

This situation highlights the unpredictability of athletes and the challenges they face during major competitions where even the smallest injury can be a source of great disappointment. From all the fans, there is a sense of support for Vondrousova, who hopes to recover quickly and return to elite sports next season.

It is also important to note that injuries in sports are a painful reality faced by even the most talented players, and everyone hopes for her speedy and complete recovery.
