M&S plans to introduce Lamington to its shelves. This delightful dessert is a square sponge cake coated in chocolate icing and rolled in coconut.
According to legend, this dessert became a classic of Australia in 1901 when Lord Lamington accidentally dipped a sponge cake in melted chocolate. Instead of throwing away the pastry, he rolled it in coconut, creating a now beloved dessert.
M&S has confirmed it will launch two versions of the Aussie treat.
- The first version is 'classic' with chocolate and coconut, garnished with buttercream and salted caramel sauce.
- The second version features caramelised biscuits, which became popular on social media following the launch at Woolworths in Australia last month.
Both desserts will cost just £4 for a pack of two and will be made in Britain.
Before the launch, Alice Birch, product developer at M&S Food, noted that the supermarket would be the first to sell this dessert in the UK.
“Lamingtons are definitely the most iconic cake from down under and it’s very exciting to be the first to bring our version of this beloved Aussie classic to the UK high street.”
“Ours are extra special – they’re hand-finished with toppings and super indulgent thanks to the rich chocolate sponge and chocolate sauce coating.
“We’ve also got a trendy caramelised biscuit variant that we’re confident shoppers will be going wild for on social media.”
Retail prices for these cakes start on Wednesday, and they will also be available on Ocado.
The launch of Lamingtons in M&S stores in Britain will give dessert lovers a chance to try one of the most beloved Australian treats. This not only highlights the growing interest in international desserts in Britain but also provides a new option for sweet lovers.
With two different flavors to choose from, M&S aims to cater to various consumer preferences, making this launch even more attractive to confectionery enthusiasts.
