The head of the union of utility consumers, Oleg Popenko, spoke about the plans to install cogeneration units in the Kyiv region.

He commented on the situation on the air of the Kyiv 24 TV channel.

According to the head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration Ruslan Kravchenko, it is planned to install 19 cogeneration units with a total capacity of over 50 MW in three districts of Kyiv region. These units should provide electricity and heat to residents of eight settlements.

The main task of the cogeneration unit is to produce electricity for the operation of boiler houses or water supply systems

However, Popenko noted that for residents of apartment buildings, the situation will not change significantly. "The main task of the cogeneration unit is to produce electricity for the operation of boiler houses or water supply systems," he explained.

The expert added that installing such units has its difficulties: "It is not easy to install it somewhere on the street, next to a residential area. You also need to find a place for installation. In the Kyiv region, most of them are installed at boiler houses."

Cogeneration units simultaneously produce electrical and thermal energy from a single fuel source, usually natural gas. They can improve energy efficiency and reduce energy costs, but their efficiency for end consumers in apartment buildings may be limited due to the characteristics of the existing infrastructure.

Earlier, Oleg Popenko expressed his position regarding the installation of solar power plants (SPP) on apartment buildings, calling such a practice "absolute evil." He stressed the irrationality of spending budgetary funds and co-owners' resources on installing SPP in apartment buildings.
