The administration of the President of the United States has decided to put about a hundred employees of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on leave and is considering the possibility of reorganizing this institution.

According to Reuters, nearly 30 employees of the USAID Legislative and Public Affairs Office were disconnected from their email over the weekend. In total, about a hundred senior agency officials have gone on leave over the past week, reports Ukrinform.

Among them are two senior officials who were responsible for USAID's security. They had previously refused to hand over classified documents to employees of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), which is led by Elon Musk.

These purges are reported to be the result of more than a week of turmoil within USAID—the main American agency dealing with funding various programs around the world. Among them are women's healthcare in conflict zones, access to clean water, HIV/AIDS treatment, energy security, and anti-corruption efforts.

Starting Saturday, the USAID website is down.

According to Reuters, the White House is considering legal options to issue an order to reorganize USAID in order to end the agency's independence.

In the meantime, billionaire Elon Musk, who has criticized USAID, called this agency a 'criminal organization' and stated: 'It's Time for this agency to die.'

'Did you know that USAID, using your tax money, funded research into biological weapons, including COVID-19, which killed millions of people?' Musk wrote on his blog.

However, he did not provide any evidence, referring instead to a source that spreads unverified information on social media related to conspiracy theories.
