Mason Greenwood leaves the door open for a return to the English national team

According to The Sun: Mason Greenwood has rejected the invitation from Jamaica, leaving the possibility of a return to the English national team open.

The 23-year-old striker from 'Marseille' expressed a desire last summer to change his football allegiance.

Steve McClaren had hoped to include Greenwood in the Jamaican national team for World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad and Tobago.

Although the young footballer has already received a Jamaican passport, he has yet to confirm his decision to forgo participation for England.

Greenwood has left the possibility open for the Three Lions by rejecting McClaren's invitation.

The former England coach admitted to being disappointed but hopes to see Greenwood in the next international matches against Curaçao and Bermuda.

“We received the passport and hoped he would join us, but in talking with his family, he decided to not commit to any national team for now”
“It’s a bit disappointing, but perhaps we should be more patient. We will continue to try, as I know from my conversations with Mason that he loves Jamaica.”

Greenwood has only received one call-up to the national team, which took place during the Nations League match against Iceland in 2020.

His debut ended, however, with his return home alongside Phil Foden due to a breach of Covid quarantine regulations.

Greenwood can play for Jamaica through his grandfather and is eligible for a change of nationality as he has played fewer than three official matches before the age of 21.

In October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, coercive control, and assault, but those charges were dropped in February 2023.

After that, Greenwood left his home club 'Manchester United' and moved on loan to the Spanish club 'Getafe'. In the summer of 2024, he signed a contract with the French club 'Marseille' and has currently scored 23 goals in 39 matches.
